yesterday wasn't so hot, i'm fighting the flu, today it seemed worse so i took off at lunchtime. as i'm walking out the door, colleague 1 says to me in german, 'hope you feel better'. colleague 2 repeats the same. i answer in english. we tend to have a mishmash of languages floating around all day, so that wasn't out of the ordinary.
C1: wait, H, how do you say that in English?
H: hope you feel better. or feel better soon, i guess.
C1: H! you guess?!? maybe you need to take an English class, not a German class.
H: (thinking: bless his cotton socks as he tries to rescue yesterday with some humor.)
H: no worries C1--as C2 would fix my English as well!
C2: (speechless and confused by the whole conversation.)
I'm sure Colleague 1 spent some minutes after I left to instruct young Colleague 2 (not so long out of university, never lived anywhere but DE), in some of the finer points of dealing with Americans. As well as to explain the joke of Heather needing an English class. And that my final comment was not literal, but a bit of sarcasm. Thankfully I was on the way home.
